Tribe Wanted day 3 - travel Freetown

Page history last edited by rsb 13 years ago

The permaculture specialist at Tribe Wanted Sierra Leone is Alejandro.  Alejandro is a great guy.  We were both into fitness in general and did some exercise in the morning, which morphed into a game of follow the leader.  That's a pretty fun way to work out.  We had an awesome time.  I think the kids really digged it, too.  I miss that guy.

Alejandro was a little earthy-crunchy.  Basically, he was telling me and Noah to respect the forest and nature and have the right attitude before you start exploring - it came out like "ask the forest for permission before you enter", which was a bit odd, but we got it.

When a giant rat-like creature was found in Noahs tent that night, Alejandro was not so interested in asking nature about it, but rather asked the villagers about it's imminent demise, in which the villagers were particularly interested, being that it is actually a bit of a delicacy around there.  Much hilarity ensued.   We understand the "ground pig" did eventually end up on someones dinner plate.

Some of the permanent buildings being built for the vacation spot are primarily made of earth bags, reinforced where necessary with rebar, barbed wire, and sealed with various sealants and mud.  They are super interesting and a lot of design goes into them.  The guy that is building them, Uman, is a renown expert on the topic and people travel to visit and help him build there.  He's also an awesome singer and player of that sitar-like thing.

Other buildings are wood on stilts on earth bags and other cement-like stuff.  They are all going to have spectacular views.  I was very comfortable and happy with my tent.  They also built great bathrooms and showers.  Nice as home.  Just a wonderful place to visit.
